Kenya Token Scam Collapses Amid Deepfake Controversy
A fraudulent cryptocurrency project dubbed 'Kenya Token' has unraveled after investigators exposed its announcement as a deepfake. The scheme attempted to capitalize on Kenya's growing crypto presence by impersonating legitimate initiatives.
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga's social media accounts were compromised to promote the token. Forensic analysis revealed the accompanying video message used AI-generated voice synthesis, bearing no resemblance to Odinga's authentic speech patterns.
The scam's branding conspicuously mirrored Kenya Digital Token (KDT), a separate government-associated project already mired in controversy. Blockchain analysts uncovered evidence of insider bundling within KDT's token distribution, raising questions about both projects' legitimacy.
